OMAHA PERFORMING ARTS ANNOUNCES
NEBRASKA HIGH SCHOOL THEATER ACADEMY AWARDS

Winners announced in the program that stretches from Omaha to Scottsbluff

Omaha Performing Arts announces high school theater students from across Nebraska who have been named award-winners for outstanding performance and technical achievements in theater through the Nebraska High School Theater Academy (NHSTA) program. The winners will receive awards at the annual Nebraska High School Theater Academy Showcase Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Orpheum Theater at 7:30 PM.

Tickets for the Showcase are $10 general admission. Visit TicketOmaha.com, contact the Ticket Omaha Box Office at (402) 345-0606 or visit the box office in person inside the Holland Center, 1200 Douglas Street in downtown Omaha to purchase tickets.

Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the red-carpet event features performances from each of the award-winning schools and students. Representatives from more than 80 high schools and middle schools statewide will work with leading local musicians and Omaha Performing Arts’ artist-in-residence, Omaha native Ray Mercer, currently playing in Broadway’s THE LION KING and resident choreographer of the Ailey/Fordham institute, on the awards’ large group opening and closing numbers. Omaha native Q. Smith, currently a member of the COME FROM AWAY Broadway cast, will host this year’s event and perform with students.

Awards include outstanding productions, top ensembles and performers, and artistic excellence behind-the-scenes. The event will also honor outstanding Nebraska educators.   One showcase lead actor and actress will be selected to represent Nebraska at the Broadway League’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards, in New York.

Additionally, Hannah-Kate Kinney from Westside High School in Omaha is a finalist to be featured as one of two student reporters at the 2019 Jimmy Awards. Help Hannah-Kate win by voting here.

The Nebraska High School Theater Academy celebrates the power of the arts and supports high school and middle school theater programs by connecting teachers and students with learning opportunities with Broadway stars, theater and stage professionals. Students also receive tickets to touring Broadway Shows, professional feedback on school performances and additional performance opportunities. The NHSTA program began in 2013 with 22 Omaha-area schools and now reaches more than 8,000 students across Nebraska each year.
