Nationals

We're proud to participate in the Broadway League’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards for a seventh year! Two outstanding student performers (one lead actor and one lead actress) will be nominated to join top students from across the country for a week of private coaching with New York University Tisch School of the Arts faculty, master classes with Broadway professionals and rehearsals in preparation for The Jimmy Awards® Showcase at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. Nominees also receive opportunities for merit scholarships, professional advancement and other awards.

Visit jimmyawards.com to check out photos, videos and learn more about students’ experiences in NYC. All travel, accommodation and food costs will be paid for by Omaha Performing Arts. The National High School Musical Theatre Awards is scheduled for the week leading up to The Jimmy® Awards Showcase in late June 2020. National nominees are determined through an application and audition process. Stay tuned for updates!

ELIGIBILITY
Students in grades 9-12 playing qualified lead roles in their adjudicated 2019/2020 NHSTA musicals are eligible to apply. Qualified lead roles are determined by the Broadway League. See the 2019/2020 list of qualified lead roles here:  2019-2020 Nationals Qualifying Lead Roles

APPEAL PROCESS

NHSTA may submit an appeal for a musical or role to be considered an Approved Musical or Qualifying Role. Appeals must be submitted using the Jimmy Awards Appeal Form. Appeals must be made prior to May 1, 2020. The Jimmy Awards Review Board will consider all appeals and make a determination with 10 days of submission. APPLICATION
Applications will be accepted starting in late-January 2020. Eligible students should submit an online application by Friday, April 3rd, 2020. To complete the application, please be prepared to submit the following items::

  • One-page resume
  • Headshot photo
  • Audition video No. 1: Perform a solo (32-bar cut) from the qualified lead role you played in your adjudicated 2019/2020 high school musical 
  • Audition video No. 2: Perform a solo (32-bar cut) of a musical theater ballad OR musical theater up-tempo piece of your choice
  • Music: Attach the piano/vocal score for the full song (not just the 32-bar cut) featured in video #1.  If the qualifying lead role you played performs more than one solo in the musical, please attach all other piano/vocal scores for those songs.  If you are invited to attend the live callback audition, please be prepared to sing any solo that your lead role performed in your school's musical.

Please note! Videos should showcase your audition abilities. Do NOT submit video from a fully staged or costumed production. 

CALLBACK AUDITION
A limited number of applicants will be invited to attend a live callback audition scheduled for Sunday, April 18, 2020, at the Holland Center. The callback will include a dance call, where students will learn a short piece of choreography to perform for the audition panel. Students will also be asked to perform the two songs submitted as a part of their application. OPA will hire a professional accompanist – please bring hard copies of your sheet music with cuts clearly marked. Callbacks will be announced after the application deadline has passed. 

FINALISTS
The callback audition panel will select up to 16 finalists (8 actors and 8 actresses) to perform as a part of the NHSTA Showcase on Friday, June 12, 2020, at 7:30 PM at the Orpheum Theater. Finalists should plan to attend showcase rehearsals at the Holland Center starting Monday, June 8, 2020 and must be available to perform at the showcase. National Finalists will be provided with free housing at Creighton University, meals, and transportation to/from dorms and rehearsal sites during the rehearsal week. National Finalists will be announced in early-May 2020. 

NATIONAL NOMINEES
From the group of National Finalists, 2 outstanding student performers (1 actor and 1 actress) will be selected to represent Nebraska in New York City. Nominees will be announced live onstage at NHSTA Showcase. Nominees must be available to travel to NYC in late-June 2019.
