To "do" or to "daht"? Rehearsal Strategies for Large Jazz Ensemble

The ability to run a productive and efficient rehearsal is key to the success of any ensemble. In this workshop, directors will address some of the common challenges that accompany running a Jazz band rehearsal in a school setting. Guest clinician Bob Krueger will facilitate discussion on the approaches that help students improve as young Jazz players, while also addressing some of the common pitfalls directors encounter when working with Jazz ensembles.

In addition, participants will play as members of a "practice" ensemble. Selected participants will "front" the band and receive feedback about how they rehearse the group from guest clinician Bob Krueger and Jazz Academy teaching artist Shawn Bell. While attendees are encouraged to play an instrument from standard big band instrumentation (sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, or drum set), all instruments are welcome to participate in this portion of the workshop.

Trombonist Shawn Bell studied music and has traveled the world as a jazz musician. For the last decade, he’s been working as an in-demand educator to inspire the next generation of jazz artists. Along with private training for students of all levels, he’s taught large and small ensembles at Northern Illinois University and Lansing Community College.
