Musical Explorers

Musical Explorers is a semester-long, curriculum-based program for grades K-2 that focuses on three local ensembles, each representing a musical style and cultural community. Designed in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, the program builds basic music skills as students learn songs from different cultures and reflect on their own communities.

Musical Explorers is a free program open to K-2 classroom teachers and elementary music teachers. The 2019 program will give your students the chance to learn about:

  • West African music with Charles Ahovissi and African Culture Connection
  • Mexican music with Marcos Mora
  • Folk music with the Wildwoods Band

HOW IT WORKS

  • Register your classroom to participate by December 20, 2018. Online registration opens in October 2018.

  • Attend a professional development workshop on January 18, 2019, or January 19, 2019, at the Holland Center to learn about incorporating the Musical Explorers curriculum in your classroom. Teachers receive printed curriculum guides with lesson plans, a CD and other resources to connect with select state standards from grades K-2.

  • Integrate Musical Explorers lessons in your classroom starting in February 2019.

  • Attend the year-end concert with your students on April 23, 2019, at the Holland Center. The free 60-minute concert features the musicians and songs from the curriculum. Reimbursement for the cost of busing is available for schools demonstrating financial need.
